BRACE-FACE 101: What makes a beautiful smile?
Ever wondered why your friend might have a more beautiful grin than you do, although you’ve gone through your orthodontics treatment? Here’s a few reasons that might explain this puzzle behind smile designs!
According to Dr Melvin Mark Chia from Tooth Angels & Co Dental Surgeons,
"The structure of your teeth alignment can affect the harmony of your facial features."
In order to fix malocclusion, there is a formula where the upper teeth have to overlap the bottom slightly, to form the classic definition of ‘corrected’ teeth.
A poorly aligned set of teeth can affect the harmony of your facial features, so wearing retainers post-braces treatment is most crucial!
Here’s some common issues that is in the way of a beautiful smile:
Overbite – Gives an appearance of sunken cheeks and an upper lip that’s jutting out.
Underbite – Chin appears to be jutting out, giving the look of a larger chin. Some people call this look “moon face”.
Open bite – The mouth looks stretched; and prevents the mouth from closing naturally.
The geometry of your face matters… a lot.
Teeth Alignment Vs Jawline

While both women are beautiful, they do not have the same smile. That is because they have different facial features. What is the perfect smile solution for Julia Roberts isn’t necessarily the same for Taeyeon.
One cannot look at teeth alignment in isolation to create a beautiful smile. One must consider how orthodontics can alter your jawline to form a harmonious composition with the rest of your facial features. In many cases, extracting 4 premolar teeth (for overcrowded/protruding teeth) will help reduce the appearance of a jutting upper lip, which reduces the fullness of your facial profile. While the appearance of one’s facial shape would alter significantly, it varies from person to person.
Size of teeth and mouth must be taken into consideration.

It is impossible to create a tiny little sexy smirk that Natalie Dormer has, if you possess a wide mouth and teeth like Anne Hathaway! That’s not to say that Anne Hathaway has terrible teeth. On the contrary, she has a megawatt smile!
The definition of beautiful smiles must consider factors such as the width of your smile and size of your teeth, in order to create an attractive smile. It is important to assess your current assets and set your expectations of what you wish to have.
Every culture has their definition of beauty.

Straight teeth aint everything because….
In Japan, the snaggletooth is considered beautiful!
Women in Japan would alter their naturally straight teeth to a messy structure of snaggletooth, without compromising their ‘bite’ too much! Sounds odd? The definition of a beautiful smile doesn’t mean perfect pearly whites either in the West. The ‘gap tooth’ between the two front teeth on high fashion models is perceived as a veritable asset. Some models go as far as shaving down the enamels in order to achieve such an appearance.
The things that you decide to do for your teeth should be based on what YOU deem as a beautiful, attractive smile. Speak to an orthodontist to see how you can craft a beautiful smile that suits your facial structure and features.
Good luck, beautiful!
